Even though Hollywood has tried to replace the Tom Cat with the F-18 sooo many times as the go-to hero fighter but the F-14 is still way cooler looking and a much more effective air superiority instrument. You want to rule the skies around an aircraft carrier group, you just need to have Tom Cats in the air with their Phoenix missiles. Tom Cruise flies in Tom Cats. Thats why the movie worked. F-14 Tomcat Forever. Even though this movie was completely inaccurate on so many damn levels, from the Aircraft to the way the Top Gun school is portrayed it was still one of my favorite childhood films. Now watching it back I cringe at alot of it knowing now what I know about aviation and aircraft, but I still enjoy the hell outta it. F-14 is a classic just so bad ass well I can see why it was so respected even I the anime world an gaming.

Also they had a fighter with GUNS that was doing just fine! Built for Dog F-8 Crusader! They pulled it out an put the Phantom in. They say the F-8 was aging! But in the end there was very few gun kills and for the Navy mostly Sidewinder kills for the Air Force Both missiles! The profits weren't totally kills were on there way out.
